"I mentally bless and exonerate anyone who has kicked a chair out from beneath her or swallowed opium in large chunks. My mind has met their environment, here in the void. I understand perfectly."
-Suzanne Finnamore, Split: A Memoir of Divorce
In 2011, artists Victoria Lucas and Richard William Wheater collaborated to create series of 12 different neon installations that were displayed on the roof of the Neon Workshop in Wakefield, West Yorkshire. The works apparently reflected the relationship they once had together.
Among the phrases from love songs (starting on Valentines Day 2011 and changing each month for the next 12 months) was from a classic heartbreak song for my generation: “Love Will Tear Us Apart” by Joy Division. I remember loving this song and often mocking it for its intensity - being quite thankful that I would never truly understand such dark emotion, or feel anything even remotely related to real heartbreak. I no longer mock it.
This project was situated so that it was visible from passing trains. It think it a beautiful way to express lost love, forfeited adoration, absent intimacy, and authentic heartbreak.
So poignant, so dramatic, so perfect.
